ABITA Beer – Abita Springs, Louisiana

Abita beer.jpgABITA Beer – Abita Springs, Louisiana

Situated in the woods 30 miles north of New Orleans this brewing company was started in 1986.  While it was getting underway they produced 1,500 barrels of beer the first year.  Today they brew over 80,000 barrels of beer and 5,000 barrels of root beer in their brewery.

They brew their product in small batches to make sure their quality meets their high standards.  The brewery is privately owned and operated by local shareholders who are proud of the quality product that comes from this brewery.

The Brewery Tour is open to anyone 21 years of age or older.  Of course, you must wear closed toe shoes on the tour.  The Abita Brewing Company is the oldest craft brewery in the southeast and one of the oldest craft breweries in the US.  Their goal is to become a nationally renowned household beer.

The tours takes approximately 1 hour and are held on Wed, Thurs. & Friday at 2 pm.  Saturday tours are from 11 am, 12 pm and 1 pm.  There are no tours on Sunday.  Their are no tours on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The key to the beer from Abita is the water; it comes directly from an artesian well in the Southern Hills aquifer system and is over 3,000 feet deep in some areas.  The testing of the water has proven that the water is free of man-made pollutants, including Tritium, a man-made radioactive isotope that marks all surface waters.

The town of Abita Springs is a result of the water.  People have come from miles away to drink the pure water available at the spring from the time of 1887 when the first railroad arrived in the area.

Come and enjoy the educational tour you will receive at the brewery.
