Laura Plantation - Vacherie, Louisiana

Laura Plantation.jpgLaura Plantation - Vacherie, Louisiana

This plantation was the winner of the 2007 Louisiana Top Tour Attraction.  The sugar plantation was built in 1805 and is one of the regions oldest and largest plantations.

Bright and vivid colors along with the guided tour told through the point of view of Laura Locoul Gore unfolds like a saga before your very eyes as you learn of the trials and tribulations that faced the women, children and slaves of Laura Plantation.

Laura Plantation is credited with the origination of the Creole folktale many of us are familiar with: Compair Lapin, or Br'er Rabbit.

Laura was a sugar plantation. Most of the work in the fields was done by the 185 slaves that lived on the farm. Our tour guide told us that some of the descendants of these slaves still live near the plantation today.

Today you can get a 60 minute tour of the plantation telling the stories of 7 generations of Creole owners, slaves and women and children that lived there.  You will also see the 11 outbuildings that are on the National Historic Register showing the livestyles lived by the generations.

Tours are scheduled daily at 10:00 AM, 11:15 AM, 12:30 PM, 1:45 PM, 3:00 PM & 4:00 PM

The plantation is open for guided tours only.  No smoking on the grounds.  Cell phones must be muted.

There is a great history to the plantation which you will enjoy learning while on the tour.
