The library has a wide collection of material from newspapers to government documents.  The Louisiana section of the library is filled with historical information on the state.  The material can be used on site by residents of the state but can be borrowed by certain others, such as employees, government officials and more.

In 1925, the Commission joined with the great philanthropic Carnegie Corporation to set about the seemingly impossible task of creating a network of libraries in a poor, rural state.  Now, all 64 parishes of the state have library services available to them

The State Library is located in downtown Baton Rouge, directly south of the State Capitol. It is bounded by North 4th Street, North Street, North 3rd Street, and Spanish Town Road.

From the East (New Orleans):

Take I-10 west to the I-10 / I-110 split (the Mississippi River Bridge exit). Stay on I-110 (to the right, going towards north Baton Rouge). Take the North Street exit (left exit). Go through the light at the bottom of the exit, and continue down North Street, taking a right at North 4th Street.

From the West (Lafayette / Lake Charles):

Take I-10 east into Baton Rouge. After you cross the Mississippi River Bridge, stay in the left lane, taking I-110 going towards north Baton Rouge. Take the North Street exit (left exit). Go through the light at the bottom of the exit, and continue down North Street, taking a right at North 4th Street.
